As her abusive husband Aaron prepares to mold their older son Jagaren into a weapon of conquest, Zira makes a bold move to escape the empire with Lee. With help from her cousin Erasmus and a mysterious young woman named Liora, Zira sets off to retrieve a hidden relic—the KAL—that may control or awaken the power inside her child. But time runs out. Betrayed, hunted, and cornered at the AMRIS Hypergate, Zira is captured, and Lee falls into enemy hands.

In the final act, Zira sacrifices herself to protect Lee during a ritual meant to extract his power. As the temple crumbles around them, Erasmus shields Lee from the collapse, while Liora exacts vengeance on the man who betrayed them.
